The luxurious Kurland Hotel is situated in a lovely estate setting, surrounded by oak trees, meadows and paddocks close to Plettenberg Bay on the Garden Route. The original Cape Dutch inspired homestead has been stylishly restored to offer supremely luxurious and welcoming accommodation in this tranquil 700 ha estate. There are two lounges, a library, dining room, deep verandas and an outside piazza eating area set around a fountain.
Kurland Hotel almost has two personas. During the Polo season, it is the undisputed kingpin of this illustrious game and is the focal point of Plettenberg Bay's active polo season. Gourmet dinners and other festive activities are included in your stay at this time. Though equestrian pursuits remain important throughout the year, Kurland Hotel relaxes into being simply a superb five star country house hotel during the rest of the year.
Accommodation
Kurland Hotel has just 12 en suite bedrooms, massive in size and all with fireplace, satellite television, phone, hairdryer, gowns and minibar. Each is decorated with a deft hand in a romantic style with fine antiques, original paintings and bright colours, providing interest and whimsy. A couple of them have huge bathrooms which are a feature in their own right with sunken baths and romantic day beds. All have extra large showers, underfloor heating and an array of toiletries. Some suites have private plunge pools and each has its own private terrace. Ten of the rooms have an additional en suite loft bedroom that is ideal for children so that Kurland Hotel is in the unusual position of being able to offer some of the most romantic accommodation on the Garden Route and yet also be family-friendly.
Facilities
Unlike most quiet and peaceful retreats on the Garden Route, at Kurland Hotel you can opt for languid days enjoying the pool or the spa …. or you can enjoy a range of amusements on the estate if you are feeling more active. For the adults there is a small health spa with aromatherapy massage, beauty treatments, steam bath, sauna and a well equipped gym, as well as polo in season. Other activities are tennis, horse riding, bird watching, scenic walks, mountain and quad bikes (all included in the rates). Beyond the estate, Kurland Hotel is well placed for enjoying some of the delights of the Tsitsikamma area of the Garden Route, Kate's personal favourite. The beaches of Plettenberg Bay, Monkeyland primate sanctuary, and the Elephant Sanctuary are all just a short drive away.
Families
Kurland Hotel is one of the most family-friendly hotels in the Garden Route with Luxury and Superior suites both having spacious upstairs loft rooms which sleep 2 and 3 children respectively, with a choice of internal or external stairs. The upstairs loft rooms are equipped with miniature dressing gowns, toys for younger children and pretty décor. Older children may enjoy mountain biking on the estate or playing tennis while for younger children there is a fully equipped playroom and enclosed play area, with its own swimming pool. Of course child minding is available day or evening so that parents can quietly slip away to enjoy a romantic excursion by themselves knowing that the children are happily ensconced at the hotel. You can dine as a family or separate meals can be arranged for children in the farmhouse kitchen if you prefer. Kurland Hotel is a Rélais & Chateaux member.
